In September 2015, AT&T launched their gigabit Internet service to Orlando businesses and residents. The rollout of this service came as a direct response to Google Fiber’s expansion plans in the region, although Orlando is not targeted directly. There are dual 12.4 MW utility feeds from separate power grids which are backed up by three Jet Turbine generators and two 2.5 MW Caterpillar Diesels. Fiber entrances are buried underground and encased in solid concrete, which prevent network disruptions. The facility is one of the most fiber-rich buildings in the central Florida region, being connected to a total of ten telecommunication carriers and colocation providers, including: AT&T, tw telecom, FPL FiberNet, Level 3 Communications, Time Warner Spectrum, Bright House Networks, Summit Broadband, Florida Lambdarail and Cogent Networks.

Orlando’s datacenter market continues to see positive growth with new providers entering the local colocation market, existing providers expanding and demand growing relatively slow but steady. Although, in general, Florida is frowned upon due to its ever-present risk for hurricanes occuring at any given moment, the area’s subsea cables that connect to various points in South America, the Caribbean and various European countries, its busy port and the diversity of emerging and prominent industries are helping to spur growth tremendously. Even though more national searches have considered the Orlando market recently, most demand is driven by local companies looking for local solutions. However, some experts argue that this trend is bound to change soon.
