In September 2015, AT&T launched their gigabit Internet service to Orlando businesses and residents. AT&T’s gigabit service is available in over 17 U.S. cities and may expand to 21 additional service areas as early as 2018, in order to compete with ISPs which provide the same service. The rollout of this service came as a direct response to Google Fiber’s expansion plans in the region, although Orlando is not targeted directly. CenturyLink announced its gigabit service in certain parts of Orlando during the same period, but that it would mainly be a business-focused service.  Time Warner Spectrum has given recently certain clues as to the possibility of raising their Internet speeds, but no concrete plans have been provided in this matter.

Colocation Datacenters in Orlando

According to datacentermap.com, there are currently 11 colocation datacenters located in Orlando. Major colocation providers include the following:

– Alterascape, LLC.
– DataSite Orlando
– Colo Solutions
– Level 3 Communications
– Atlantic Net

One of the biggest colocation providers is Datasite Orlando, which operate their own 130,000-square-foot purpose-built datacenter located in Orlando. It is strategically located in close proximity to the FL Turnpike, The Beach Line Expressway and Orlando International Airport. The facility provides N+1 redundancy on all critical environmental infrastructure. There are dual 12.4 MW utility feeds from separate power grids which are backed up by three Jet Turbine generators and two 2.5 MW Caterpillar Diesels. Fiber entrances are buried underground and encased in solid concrete, which prevent network disruptions. The facility is one of the most fiber-rich buildings in the central Florida region, being connected to a total of ten telecommunication carriers and colocation providers, including: AT&T, tw telecom, FPL FiberNet, Level 3 Communications, Time Warner Spectrum, Bright House Networks, Summit Broadband, Florida Lambdarail and Cogent Networks.

Orlando’s datacenter market continues to see positive growth with new providers entering the local colocation market, existing providers expanding and demand growing relatively slow but steady. Although, in general, Florida is frowned upon due to its ever-present risk for hurricanes occuring at any given moment, the area’s subsea cables that connect to various points in South America, the Caribbean and various European countries, its busy port and the diversity of emerging and prominent industries are helping to spur growth tremendously. Even though more national searches have considered the Orlando market recently, most demand is driven by local companies looking for local solutions. However, some experts argue that this trend is bound to change soon.

All the companies that we have reviewed do not operate their own datacenters, and provide little to no details regarding the facilities in which their servers are located. Additionally, most companies do not operate outside Orlando, which means that their services cater to a local clientele exclusively.
